A Million Years from Now

All things had names when man existed
He thought language was all his
He fought and killed those he called brothers
Above all other kind he is.

I watched him cutting down the forest
Acrid smoke rags in the air.
Dying stumps a hellish horror
Awesome damage every where.

The juggernaut of human greed
Got all confused with want and need.
And so they passed with global warming
Rubbish heaps with rats all swarming

To leave the world when they have passed
As nature means, with out their "help"
A wilderness that teams with life
And seas awash with fish and kelp

Spiders and beetles every where
And insects buzz that fills the air
The wolf who howls over his den
Does not live in fear of men
The mountain-tops are now unconquered
The weather's wiped all trace of man
Goats keep to the highest places
Wild beasts catch them, if they can.

No hand will reach out for the poison
When the eagle's cry is heard
Rust has eaten all the weapons
No one will destroy the bird.

But now I, the wild wind's spirit
And my sister water sprite
Tidy up the tattered planet
And we put the world to rights

I'll watch the birds and hear their songs
And keep the woodland growing free
The holly and the ivy green
Left to grow as they should be.

And I shall wander all the year
Along the tracks made by the deer
And I shall sing out as I pass
And stoop to stroke the sighing grass.
